Fearing an escalation of job losses, the Canadian furniture industry calls for an investigation with a view to protecting as a backup due to a large influx of furniture residential manufactured in China. The Canadian Council of Furniture Manufacturers (CCFM) filed a complaint with the Canadian International Trade Tribunal (CITT) calling for tariffs or quotas should be imposed to safeguard give Canadian furniture manufacturers time to s' adapt. Such quotas or duties will normally remain in force for a period of three to five years. Under the rules of world trade, an industry may seek protection as a backup if it can demonstrate - through job losses, sales, customer, etc.. - It may damage visible because of a rapid and unexpected influx of imports Foreign. According to the president of the Association of Furniture Manufacturers of Ontario, the Canadian furniture industry could lose 10,000 of its 35,000 jobs by 2007 because of Chinese competition. This would deal a decisive blow to the industry that calls itself in crisis. Protection as a safeguard would give the industry the manufacture of furniture more time to adjust to imports and to develop new technologies that enhance competitiveness. The Tribunal must make a decision within 90 days.
